The first event dedicated to Portuguese
Modernist architecture.
Faro has one of the largest concentrations of Modernist architecture in South Europe. Visionary architects, most of whom graduated from the prestigious Architecture School of Porto" (ESBA) came to the Algarve after 1950 and brought their own spin on Bauhaus and the International Style, reworking it for the Algarve environment.
They were inspired by the Modernist mouvement led by architects like Le Corbusier, Niemeyer, Frank Lloyd Wright to name a few.

THE MIRACLE
OF
FARO ARCHITECTURE
Faro has an incredible and unique collection of Modernist buildings built between 1920-1979. This miracle happened thanks to the collaboration between talented Portuguese architects and visionary clients, most of them wealthy emigrants from Latin America influenced by the avant-garde Modernist tropical architecture.
Together they adapted this approach to the Algarve climate and culture specificities to create a unique style we call "South Modern". This style is unique in the history of Portuguese architecture.

Richard Walker
Collectable artist - London ( UK)
Richard Walker is a British artist based in London. Born in 1954 in Yorkshire, Richard graduated in 1977 with an MA in printmaking after attending 3 London art colleges including Camberwell and Chelsea. Since then he has exhibited his work internationally having had over 50 shows in London, Paris, Hamburg, Berlin, Hannover, Los Angeles and Sardinia. He is in many public and private collections and has had numerous commissions, including murals and installations in London and New York.
Richard's work often combines architectural elements with collaged abstract forms and has been described as 'layered and subtle, joyful and poignant' by Galleries magazine in the UK.
Now exhibiting as part of the first FARO MODERNIST WEEKEND he is celebrating the relatively unknown but significant 20th century architecture of Faro. The Venue is the Aeromar hotel in Faro Island designed by the most celebrated modernist architect of the Algarve, Manuel Gomes da Costa.

Who we are ?
We are Angélique and Christophe De Oliveira and we settled in Portugal in 2018, following Chris' Portuguese roots. We immediately fell in love with Faro and became promoters of its Modernist architectural heritage. We even wrote a book.
In 2021, we launched The Modernist accommodation in Faro. With it, we created a unique architectural hospitality experience and became a reference in architecture travel in Europe. We have been featured in Forbes, Monocle, National Geographic, Elle Decor and Evasoes.
Following our passion for architecture, we had a dream to gather others passionate for the first Modernist architecture weekend in Faro. Let's share the relatively unknown but significant heritage of Faro.
